Goethe the Naturalist
February 15 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm£5
Evening Seminar by Dr.Judyth Sassoon, Associate Researcher at the Field Centre, Ruskin Mill
Despite being one of the leading literary figures of his time, Goethe believed his greatest accomplishments lay in the natural sciences. He built an entire philosophy of nature on essentially three principles: polarity, intensification (“Steigerung”) and compensation. In Goethe’s view, these principles work together to constitute nature’s “drive” towards formation and creativity. This lecture will focus particularly on Goethe’s contribution to the biological sciences, especially his work in plant and animal morphology. His surprisingly modern view of the reality of organic change and the unity of nature will be discussed.
A donation of £5 per person is suggested, payable on the night. Staff attendance is free.
