“Bortoft on the Wholeness of Nature”, a public lecture by Dr Troy Vine

16/11/2018 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Henri Bortoft’s interpretation of Goethe’s
approach to science has been influential among
practitioners and philosophers of Goethean
science alike. Yet Bortoft neither traces the
history of the key ideas that underpin his
interpretation, nor elaborates on how these ideas
relate to Goethe’s own understanding of his
scientific method.

After reviewing the two key ideas in Bortoft’s
interpretation — the concept of “intuitive
experience” and the distinction between what
Bortoft calls “authentic and counterfeit wholes”
— we will consider the history of these ideas and
their relation to Goethe’s thought.

This public lecture, open to all, is given by Dr. Troy Vine, from the Department of Philosophy, Humboldt University, Berlin.
